Carved into a mountain on the banks of Lake Nasser, the temples of Abu Simbel were built by Ramesses II for himself and his queen Nefertari. Four colossal statues of the king guard the entrance of the Great Temple.

Why visit

In the 1960s, the temples were moved block by block to save them from the rising waters, in one of the greatest rescue projects in history. Twice a year, the rising sun shines deep into the temple to illuminate the statues in its sanctuary.
